You get a fixed number of installs, usually five. Sign out of another computer and try again.

thought I was hosed when I ran out of old MSDN licenses, but haven’t needed Office (or even Open/LibreOffice) since Google Docs matured.

Where did you get your code from? If it was a brick and mortar some one might have stolen the numbers before you got it, or if it was online it might have been oversold.

The fact that it’s Office Pro Plus on a personal computer is strange by itself. Did it come with Office? Was the computer an off-lease?
Either way, get in contact with Microsoft’s customer care and they can look into it. Might be a glitch. Make sure you have the original box and/or activation key and the computer it’s on handy, and possibly not the one that you use if you initiate chat support.
Worst-case scenario is you have to subscribe to Office 365. Better to have actual Office than the wannabes, though.

LibreOffice is your friend.
Unless you are using Access (really, who uses that?), the LibreOffice can take care of virtually all of your ‘office’ needs.
